Expensive year for gay donors
A race expected in the U.S. Senate next year by lesbians Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) is likely to intensify an unprecedented demand for fund raising within the LGBT community for the 2012 elections on national, state and local levels, according to LGBT advocacy groups.
Political observers say Baldwin, Wisconsin has emerged as the leading Democratic candidate in the competition for a Senate seat vacated by Democratic Senator Herb Kohl, who has announced he will not run for another term next year .
With Baldwin said he had a decent chance of becoming the nation's first openly gay senator, LGBT rights groups from across the country are preparing to raise money for his campaign, even if it is not expected to officially announce its candidacy later this summer.
Fundraising among donors to LGBT Baldwin Senate campaign comes at a time when these donors are asked to give money to the reelection campaign of President Barack Obama and the LGBT and LGBT campaigns supporting candidates for Congress, state legislatures, and positions of city government and the city.
LGBT donors should also be solicited for campaign contributions opposing state ballot measures to ban gay marriage or the right to legalize same-sex couples to marry as many as five states in 2012.
Chuck Wolfe, executive director of Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which raises money for GLBT candidates, said the cost of a Senate race Baldwin would probably rise to between 15 million and $ 20 million.
"So if our community can be an important player in this race and we hope it will, which will result in a significant investment," he said."And I expect to see the LGBT community to play an important role in this race."
Campaign finance records show that Baldwin has already raised more than $ 1 million for his house's re-election race, which it expects to use for a Senate race. Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wisc.), which is currently considering a challenge Baldwin for the appointment of the Senate in a Democratic primary, has raised far less money than Baldwin, and reported $ 478 000 cash in hand last week.
Almost all observers say Baldwin does shrink a Senate race Senator from Wisconsin, Russ Feingold if the former is entering the race.Feingold, a champion of progressive causes for the Wisconsin Democrat, lost his re-election last year to Republican Ron Johnson. He suggested that it is not likely to run for the seat vacated by Mr. Kohl.
