Nolan: Anglers put UW-Platteville on the college fishing map
Lex Jered and several of his classmates started a fishing club at UW-Platteville in the spring.
"The club has grown to about 10 people and we got some different companies to sponsor (us) by sending us free gear and stuff at reduced prices," said Lex in a week last email.
He now hopes to reel in a few more members and a little publicity in the fall.
The second album to be of Cottage Grove, with classmate Noah Hemfeld of Monona, was 12th in the 40 teams in the FLW National Guard College Fishing Central Division event on the Detroit River, which ended July 16 on the Detroit River in Trenton , Michigan.
The Pioneers caught five fish weighing a total of 11 pounds, three ounces. Winners - Jonas Ertel and Tyler Moberly Eastern Kentucky - pulled in five fish weighing 17-12. This duo was followed in the top five money paid by the fishermen of the Northwest Indiana, Southern Illinois-Western Kentucky and Edwardsvile.
The victory earned the team Eastern Kentucky $ 10,000 will be shared between the University and the University Bass Fishing Club - $ 7,500 for the club bass and $ 2,500 for their school. The victory also helped to advance the regional championship of Central Division.
Lex was proud of finishing Platteville.
"Considering many other clubs have been around for several years and most of the fishermen of other students are juniors and seniors, I think it was a real feat," he said. "Put on top schools like Purdue The University of Kentucky, St. Cloud State and the University of Missouri was a great achievement.
"Out of school in Wisconsin in the event, we placed over UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Madison, losing to UW-Stout with a little less than a pound."
Ben Gilles and Ryan Helke led UW-Stout with five fish at 12-01, good for ninth place. UW-Whitewater Addison Peck Marshall and Paul Taylor took 13 (11-02).
UW-Oshkosh fishermen Janke Chad Marshall and Jordan Mortenson puled in three fish at 6-06 and finished 24th while UW fishermen and Luke Brandon Neldner-Staedte Hrovat, a former Madison student, caught a bass weighing 2 pounds and set to the 34th.
The top five teams from each tournament qualify for the regional championship where the team will win first place $ 12.500 in cash for their school and $ 12 500 cash and a bass boat Ranger 177TR with a 90 horsepower Evinrude or off- Mercury board wrapped in school colors for their fishing club.
